Eleven species of sea fish are endemic to Macaronesia, this means they can only be found in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Madeira, the Azores and the Canary archipelagos. It is debatable if the Cape Verde Islands belong to Macaronesia region, as there are many species there more similar to tropical mainland Africa than to the other three archipelagos.
There are about 550 sea fish species around Madeira. The considerable distance of the Madeira archipelago from the continent is one of the main reasons why there are not more species using this rich habitat as their own. The best example for this fact is the family Sparidae (sea breams) : at the Azores, the most distant archipelago from the continent, there are only 7 species of this family, while in Madeira there are 15 and in the Canaries, the closest archipelago to the continent, there are 24 species.
All 7 islands that form the archipelago of Madeira (Madeira, Porto Santo, Ilhéu Chão, Deserta Grande, Bugio, Selvagem Grande, Selvagem Pequena) of which only the first 2 are populated, are volcanic and this is why SCUBA diving around here is so interesting.
Here you have a list of the main species that can be seen at Madeira when SCUBA diving in its crystal waters and some information that can be useful to identify each species:
