2nd record of Long-tailed Duck to Madeira archipelago

On the 1st of June 2013 around 4:30 pm in Lugar de Baixo pond, Ponta do Sol, a male Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis was observed during a Wind Birds' full-day birdwatching tour. This sea duck was diving successively on this brackish water pond which made us believe that it had arrived recently as it was not observed there on the previous day by other birdwatchers that visited the pond.

According to Romano et al., 2010 the 1st record of this species for Madeira archipelago was by Schmitz in 1909, making this bird observation, in the 1st of June 2013, the 2nd for Madeira, recorded 104 years after the 1st one. This is a case to say that Long-tailed Duck is a really rare vagrant to Madeira!
