Superfamily: Papilionoidea Family: Pieridae Status: Unconfirmed Record
A medium-sized butterfly with a more lemon yellow colour than Colias croceus, with a more extensive shading on the fore-wings’ basal and an orange discoidal spot on the hind-wings.
Its larva is similar to the Clouded Yellow, green with pale yellow subspiracular line.
Its larva feeds on Medicago, Lotus, Trifolium and Hippocrepis species (Tolman & Lewington, 2008)
It prefers flowery, grassy and cultivated areas.
Regional status according to Aguiar & Karsholt, 2006: It was first recorded by Cockerell, 1923 based on a probably unlabelled specimen from ‘Museu do Seminário’ collection. It is unlikely that the specimen, if correctly identified, was collected in Madeira. All subsequent records of C. hyale from Madeira are based on this record.
Regional status according to Wakeham-Dawson et al., 2001: Doubtful record
Status according to the European Red List of Butterflies, 2010: Least Concern
