On the 17th of April 2011 in Machico river, Catarina & Hugo recorded a male Yellow-crowned Wagtail Motacilla flava flavissima Blyth, 1834 which is the first record of this subspecies for Madeira islands. Previous records of this species include Western Yellow Wagtail Motacilla flava flava, Iberian Yellow Wagtail Motacilla flava iberiae, Ashy-headed Wagtail Motacilla flava cinereocapilla, Dark-headed Wagtail Motacilla flava thunbergi, all considered occasional for Madeira Archipelago (Romano et al., 2010).
Also on the river were a Spotted Sandpiper Actitis hypoleucos, a common visitant to Madeira and a Moorhen Gallinula chloropus, a breeding bird to Madeira but not common at this place.
