Despite the uncommon wind direction (Southwest) for this time of year which blown the most common seabirds, like Cory's shearwater Calonectris borealis and Bulwer's Petrel Bulweria bulwerii away from the south side of the island, we observed good bird species during the 3 day pelagic expedition:
30th May 2023 - 7 knots of WSW wind and 0.5 meter waves from SW which developed to 1 meter by the evening
3 Desertas / Fea's Petrel Pterodroma feae/deserta
2 European Storm petrel Hydrobates pelagicus
Leach's Storm-petrel Oceanodroma leucorhoa
Yellow-legged Gull Larus michahellis
2 Lesser Black-backed gull Larus fuscus
Sabine's gull Xema sabini
2 Cory's shearwater Calonectris borealis
some Bulwer's Petrel Bulweria bulwerii
29th May 2023 - Started with 2 to 0 knots of SW wind, then around 18:30 a light breeze up to 7 knots from SE picked up. Waves were from North up to 0.5 meter.
On the way up to the chumming position:
Several flocks of Cory's shearwater Calonectris borealis and Manx shearwater Puffinus puffinus puffinus mostly sitting.
In one of these flocks, quite close to shore, there was a dead night heron floating.
Common Bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus
Short-beaked common dolphins Delphinus delphis
On the chumming area:
Bulwer's Petrel Bulweria bulwerii
Arctic tern Sterna paradisaea
Long-tailed Jaeger Stercorarius longicaudus
Zino's Petrel Pterodroma madeira
2 European Storm petrel Hydrobates pelagicus
Wilson's Storm-petrel Oceanites oceanicus
Leach's Storm-petrel Oceanodroma leucorhoa
5 Yellow-legged Gull Larus michahellis
Scopoli's shearwater Calonectris diomedea - only identified much later on a photo
28th May 2023 - SW wind up to 8 knots. 1 meter waves from the same direction
Very few Bulwer's Petrel Bulweria bulwerii and Cory's shearwater Calonectris borealis than what would be common with NE winds
Arctic tern Sterna paradisaea
Common tern Sterna hirundo
5 Madeiran Storm petrel Oceanodroma castro
2 Wilson's Storm-petrel Oceanites oceanicus
3 European Storm petrel Hydrobates pelagicus
4 Manx shearwater Puffinus puffinus puffinus
Yellow-legged Gull Larus michahellis
Loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta
Portuguese man-of-war Physalia physalis
