Madeira Carnival with several interesting vagrant birds:
"On Monday 09Feb09 there were 2 first winters and an adult. Following this initial sighting we visited the sight on each day until the 16th when 6 were present. The birds are generally sedentary but occasionally mobile moving east to the fort or out into harbour. It should be noted that the younger birds, the first and second winters showed plumage characteristics of Kumleins race but I am most careful not to claim such a race until they have been studied more carefully. I have seen many dubious claims of Kumleins from the UK in the past and the photo's often seem more like nominate Iceland. I would be very interested if observers would be able to visit the site and provide greater input into the final ID. The birds appeared to be happy where they were feeding and loafing, so hopefully they may still be around."
Other Dan's sightings included 1st winter Laughing Gull and 1st winter Mediterranean Gull.
